Poor reception to phone mast plan : WORRIED business owners are fighting plans to build a mobile phone mast near them. Mobile networks Vodafone and O2 have applied for permission to build the 13.8-metre mast on Tattenham Crescent in Tattenham Corner. But people from the neighbourhood are unhappy with the scheme because they say that the area described as a "land parcel" in the planning application is, rather, in the middle of a pavement in the heart of a shopping precinct. Jose Romay, who owns El Rincon restaurant in Tattenham Crescent, said: "We have a patio outside the restaurant and in the summer the last thing people will want to do is sit and see the mast or listen to the mast humming. "It's a small corner parade of shops. All we want to do is improve the area but the mast will not help at all." As well as the six-antennae mast, the mobile phone companies also want to build two associated radio equipment cabinets which will take up more space on the pavement. A petition against the proposals has garnered more than 100 signatures and neighbours are also submitting written objections on the scheme to Reigate and Banstead Borough Council. Masters of Epsom toy shop owner Jennifer Masters said: "They want to put it right opposite the disabled access parking bay which will cause problems for a lot of people if they want to get to the post office and it'll be hard to get a baby buggy or wheelchair around it. "There are so many better places they could put it rather than in the middle of a built up area like this. It's ridiculous and a lot of people are very angry." Neighbours are also concerned that the height of the mast means it will be level with the windows of nearby flats, which could lead to privacy complaints if engineers have to work on the structure. John Wilkins, manager of the Tattenham Corner branch of Eastlands estate agents, said: "It's going to make it very difficult for us to sell or let any of the flats along here. "We rent out three or four at the moment but people looking out of their window wouldn't want to see the mast." John Butcher, chairman of the Tattenham Residents' Association, added: "There are living quarters within a few metres of where the mast will be. "The residents' association is putting out leaflets to make sure people are aware of what's going on. "The scientific evidence about health risks from phone masts is still unproven but there will be some people who are very concerned." The plans are due to be considered by Reigate and Banstead borough councillors in the coming weeks.
